John Coffin drafts of statements to the Court of Inquiry, 1783.

Two complete drafts and three incomplete fragments of Major John Coffin's statement in reply to the defense of Lieutenant-Colonel George Campbell at Campbell's court martial. The first draft (11 p., numbered on recto only), is addressed to "Mr. President & Gentlemen of the Board," and has a note in a different hand on the back of p. 11, "Major Coffin's Reply to Col. Campbell's Defence [sic] before the Court of Enquiry, June 1783"; it describes Coffin's encounter on the street with Campbell after Campbell's sentencing, and strenuously denies that he challenged Campbell to a duel, as Campbell asserted. The second complete draft (10 p., numbered), also addressed to "Mr. President & Gentlemen of the Board," appears to be for a statement to be submitted during the court martial proceedings, arguing that the number of officers giving evidence against Campbell is proof of the truth of the charges, and describing in detail Campbell's conflict with Colonel Fanning. The first fragment (pages numbered 21-22, 27-32, plus four unnumbered pages) discusses the charges of extortion levelled at Campbell from the regiment's time in Georgia; the second, which bears the heading "To be inserted at the mark in margin of page 7" (58 pages, mostly numbered) addresses various other charges against Campbell as do the remaining five fragments, all with unnumbered pages.

Major John Coffin and Lieutenant-Colonel George Campbell both served in the loyalist King's American Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Campbell was very unpopular among his fellow officers in the regiment, and was court martialed in the summer of 1783. Among the charges levelled against him was unfair treatment of fellow officer Abraham de Peyster, who Campbell had had arrested and tried on a variety of charges earlier that year. (De Peyster was acquitted.) The court suspended Campbell with...
